FROM THE FIRST DAY OF FRESHMAN YEAR THE WORLD SEEMED TO open its arms to Danny Granville. Jeff Letourneau, the captain of the varsity boys’ baseball team said hello to him in the hall and called him by name, and introduced Danny to what seemed like everyone. In the cafeteria, Jeff’s sister Eve and her girlfriends, all juniors, waved him over to their table on the first day and never let him sit alone.

By the second week of September, Danny knew everyone at U-High who would be playing baseball in the spring. Though the first day of the official start of the season was five months away, there was a buzz that filled the air like static when Danny saw another player in the halls of the school. The juniors and seniors on the varsity team nodded to him when they saw him between classes. They tapped his shoulder and said, “What’s up,” when they saw him at his locker.

The school days were filled with biology and humanities and Spanish and algebra, reports, presentations, essays, tests, and quizzes. For health class he designed a workout routine for the pitchers that incorporated strength, speed, agility, and quickness training, along with cardiovascular exercise, stretching, and plyometrics. He studied ballistics and explosive training, and with his father’s help, designed a resistance station for the fitness center using cables, pulleys, dumbbells, and medicine balls.
